Harvey Milk DVD

Harvey Milk is a film starring Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, and James Franco, among others, that revolves around the gay activist of the same name. Told through flashbacks, the film follows Milk from his 40th birthday until his ultimate death.

The film chronicles Milk's move from the closet, to his stint in New York, to his move to San Francisco, the last of which is where he is elected to political office. It is in the Castro district that Milk quickly emerges as a voice of the gay community. In fact, his winning election makes him the first openly gay man in the United States to be elected to office.

The latter half of the film focuses on the struggles Milk faces with Dan White, a conservative in the city, and the 1978 initiative to ban gays from public jobs in California. The film won many awards, including an Academy Award for Sean Penn's performance as Milk.
