Roses

Since the dawn of time roses have always been valued for their beauty. They are surrounded by symbolism and even have their own language. Their colors have significance and even their quantity or presentation triggers importance.

In the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations this unique flower was often identified with the goddesses of love, referring to Aphrodite or Venus. This cultural development pointed straight to the affairs of the heart and was able to survive place and time… from historical Persia to modern-day Paris, from exotic Rio de Janeiro to the worldly city of Victoria.

Roses are desired and not only with the purpose of adorning a crystal vase. Hybridizing roses is a very popular pastime and with the creation of every new and interesting variety the grower is given the pleasure of picking an original name. It is amazing how many elements and characteristics that need to be taken in account when tackling this assignment. Are the blooms large and cup shaped or is the plant almost thornless yet offers an intriguing fragrance? Is it a new hybrid tea rose or a different kind of miniature or climber? As you can see it offers a lot of variety and is considered quite an interesting hobby!

These magnificent flowers have been bred for their gorgeous shapes and tantalizing fragrances and are popular all year around. They come in a multitude of colors, some created by nature, others tinted by man. Occasionally you even see a blue or black one, and even though they are given a special meaning, you may wonder if gene splicing has really reached that level of progress yet.

This queen of flowers allows its colors to speak volumes. Who does not know that red means love, regardless if it is a bright Scarlet or a deep Burgundy? Lavender roses show that you have fallen in love with someone from the moment you laid eyes on them. All shades of pink represent gratitude, while you would give a friend a golden to light yellow bouquet. These last ones can also be given to new mothers, newlyweds, and graduates. White roses can be given to those who are innocent, reverent, and pure. Combine red and white and you are symbolizing unity. If you feel the need to show enthusiasm and desire, orange or coral are a good choice.

Not just the splendor of their colors makes roses so precious, but also the way they are presented. If you receive a bouquet of unopened roses, it indicates innocent love and youth. If the buds are red and pink it means you are youthful and beautiful and if a fully opened rose with two rosebuds is delivered, you can bet someone has a secret. There is quite an array of emotional values attached to these royal blossoms and the interpretation of the colors may not always be agreed upon. That is the way it always goes… Yet! There is one meaning nobody will ever argue about: the gift of one single red rose! It is considered to be one of the most beautiful and romantic gestures a lover can make and even though it may be hard to admit, it is ultimately the expression of romance we all long to receive!
