Protection through smoke alarms or detectors.
Regardless if you call them detectors or alarms, these mass produced safety devices are one heck of an amazing invention. They cost practically nothing yet save thousands of lives every year.
Buying a smoke alarm and strategically installing it in your house could save your home and the lives of you and your family. We are talking about a system that will alert you when it discovers smoke and help you to prevent major disasters. Believe it; fire can start in the weirdest places even the freezer compartment of your fridge.
Smoke detectors consist of two basic parts: a sensor to sense the smoke and a very loud electronic horn. The devices are usually battery powered or are wired to the home electrical system. How many alarms you need will depend on the amount of rooms you want to monitor.
How does a smoke alarm work? Inside the smoke detector is a small container called an ionization chamber. In that particular section are little electrical bits called Ions and Electrons, which constantly move between two metal plates. When smoke gets into the chamber it attaches itself to the Ions and Electrons, slowing them down. The smoke detector notices that the bits are decelerating and triggers the alarm to beep. That is when we know danger looms. Recent studies have shown that a new type of smoke alarm, which is based on optical detection, and called a photoelectric alarm, is better at detecting some types of smoke than Ionization alarms. Therefore, it is recommended that you install both systems to better guard your house and family.
Because smoke rises, most detectors are mounted on the ceiling or high up on a wall. To avoid the nuisance of false alarms they are usually not spotted in kitchens. On the other hand they can often be found in a hallway near bedrooms. This way sleeping occupants will wake up faster if a fire would occur.
When your alarm starts making funny little beeping sounds it means the battery needs to be replaced. Test the new battery to make sure it is fresh. The smoke detector is one of three pieces of fire safety equipment recommended for homes. The other two are a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket. If you are living in a multi-story building a rope ladder may come in handy if you need to make a dramatic exit.
Note: carbon monoxide cannot be detected by a smoke detector. It needs a different type of detector.
