The Battlestar Galactica Journey

Battlestar Galactica. What an amazing series and considered one of the best television shows of all time.

From its inception, Battlestar Galactica portrayed an epic story with strong characters. A remake from the original series in the late 1970s, the new Galactica dug deeper for a darker and grittier look with the characters to match. And such characters! Gaius Baltar, tortured genius searching for redemption. Admiral Adama and Madame President, both trying to hold the remainder of humanity together, both struggling with their own demons. Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, Saul, Chief, the list goes on and on. So many well developed characters, it seems impossible they all came from the same show.

The development of the Cylons (known by the Colonials as "Toasters") into believable characters was an ingenious move on the series producers' part. Evolving into machines almost completely indistinguishable from humans made them a force to be reasoned with on the viewer's level. This gave them emotions and turned them into people we could identify with.

I loved these characters and I hated them. But I never gave up on any of them. And I never gave up on the story, because it was a wonderful story. Encompassing years in the lives of these people and toasters, it showed a struggle that went beyond hatred and taught people what was more important, the strength and endurance of relationships. Whether it was Boomer and Helo, Adama and Laura or Saul and Helen, I always loved to watch all of these people interact.

The series was not without its comic moments. The tormented Baltar provided many amusing segments to watch. And the series long relationship between Lee Adama and Kara Thrace was breathtaking with its highs and lows.

Battlestar Galactica DVD is a series I will gladly watch over and over again.
