Tarantino DVDs are the Best
I've determined that the best DVDs on the planet are definitely those of Quentin Tarantino. Each DVD he releases is better than the last. They have remarkable features and special interviews with actors and behind the scenes individuals. Tarantino and his production company seem to put together the most comprehensive and elaborate DVDs on the market. Each one seems to outdo the previous one.
His first release, Reservoir Dogs, is by far my favorite movie, but not necessarily the best DVD. I've always found that it lacked a lot of the comprehensive imagery and defined ideas that are very apparent in his later work. My guess is that it stems from the fact that he filmed the movie during the early 1990s before the idea of DVDs really took off.
Pulp Fiction, on the other hand is one of the best ones he's released, despite the fact that it was released around the same time. The DVD version I have comes complete with the missing scenes that were filmed during the time. One of the scenes is a really good video camera point of view shot with Uma Thurman video taping John Travolta and asking him questions. Another one, a little less cool, was an extended conversation between Bruce Willis and the cab driver after the boxing match in which he kills the other fighter. Other cool features on the DVD include retrospectives and interviews. It even offers a cool viewable version of the script.
One of his less-known films, Four Rooms, is also one of my favorite DVDs. Tarantino only directed one fourth of the film, but it is still killer. The story revolves around a bellboy and four different rooms he visits during his overnight shift on New Years Eve. I guess the DVD itself doesn't offer a ton of great imagery or options, but I still like the movie and can definitely recommend it.
Jackie Brown is an interesting DVD. This movie was produced as the DVD market was being implemented so it has some of the fundamental features that start making a real cool interactive experience. This is great Samuel L. Jackson vehicle with an amazing array of cast members that make up one of the greatest ensembles imaginable. Pam Grier and Robert de Niro both have interesting interviews on the special features section.
Everyone loves Kill Bill. Both movies are some of the best DVDs out there. The extra features offer an amazing plethora of behind the scenes footage, interviews, making of featurettes and even music videos. Tarantino, himself, makes a few random appearances and really brings the whole thing together. What I really love is that it's two movies that work together almost as one on two DVDs.
